3. Adi Parva
- Begins with the King Shantanu of Hastinapura
- Puru (Pauravas) and Kuru (Kauravas) dynasty
- King Shantanu met Ganga Devi and wanted to marry her
- Ganga Devi set conditions for the marriage that Shantanu should not question who she is and/or her actions
- Shantanu agreed and married Ganga Devi
- When their first son was born, Ganga Devi took it and drowned the baby in the river
- Shantanu was shocked, but did not question her because of the agreement
- Ganga Devi repeatedly did the same for the next 6 babies
- When their eighth child was born, Shantanu could not take it anymore and questioned her as to who she is and why she is drowning the babies
- Ganga Devi told Shantanu that she is Ganga Devi and it is time for her to leave him as he broke the agreement
- Ganga Devi explained that the eight babies were the Ashtavasus and because of the curse of Sage Vashishta, they were born as humans
- She told Shantanu that she will give back the eighth child once he is sixteen
- Name of the eighth child was Devavrata
- Devavrata learnt from different gurus - scriptures from Sage Vashishta, archery from Parashurama in Deva Loka
- Devavrata joined King Shantanu and was heir to the throne of Hastinapura
- King Shantanu met Satyavati, a fisherwoman and wanted to marry her
- Satyavati's father did not want her to marry Shantanu as her sons will not inherit the throne of Hastinapura
- In order for Shantanu to marry Satyavati, Devavrata took vows that he will not inherit the throne and that he will never get married. He came to be known as Bheeshma
- Long before, because of the blessing of Paraashara Muni, Satyavati had a son who is none other than Vyasa
