Hari OM Dear Families,

Here is this week's update.

Week : 27
19th May 2024 9:15AM

Class began with 3 OMs followed by

"Om Saha Navavatu" (page 8 in My Prayers book)
Om shrI Ganeśaya Namaha,  shrI Saraswatyai Namaha,  shrI Sat Gurubhyo Namaha.
"Vakratunda Mahakaya" (page 27 in My Prayers book)
"Saraswati Namastubhyam" (page 12 in My Prayers book)
"Gurur Brahma" (page 60 in My Prayers book)
"Neelaam buja" & "SriRama Rama rameti" (page 129 My prayers book)

Key to Success- Vibhishana Gita

Armor- (Kavacha bedha Vipra Guru pooja) This is an important part of the Dharma chariot. Lord Rama tells Vibheeshana, that reverence for Guru and for the learned who know the scriptures is the  unbreakable armor. Our intellect is not always clear and capable of understanding the truth. We must get help from a spiritual master to lead us in the right direction and we will always be protected in life.

The respect for the scholarly and wise people and worshipping our Guru, becomes the kavacha- the Armor, which is a powerful body protection that nothing could penetrate through. This is that kavacha that guards you, will stay there and protect you.

In the battlefield, the armor protects the warrior from arrows/weapons shot at them. Similarly, in the Dharma Chariot, our armor is our devotion to our Guru. Guru plays a very important role in our lives. Guru is the one that removes the darkness of our ignorance and enlightens us with knowledge. What happens when we respect wise people?

*When we respect and admire our gurus and wise people, we would like to possess their good qualities. Respect for all these scholars will expand and multiply.

Gurudev's dynamism is looked on in awe and all His followers would want to possess it. Respecting and Admiring wise people and our bhakti towards Guru forms a kavacha for our benefit and protection. A sadak who has this kavacha, will grow.

Our Guru helps break the shackles of our own likes and dislikes that bind by imparting the knowledge of the values given in our scriptures and thus enabling us the freedom we desire always. We are eternally grateful to our great Gurus like Adi Sankara, our Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda and our Pujya Swamiji and all the great saints and sages.

The story of Paanchajanyam, the conch of SriKrishna and how He acquired it.

Krishna and Balarama approached Guru Sandipani to ask him what they could offer as Guru-dakshina. The Guru consulted  requested that they bring back their son who drowned in the sea. Balarama and Krishna went to the seashore. They knew Sankasur captured guru's son and fought with him, saved the son and brought him back to their guru. The guru and gurumata were overjoyed as their son was back. Guru gave the conch to Krishna and blessed Him. The Lord holds the conch as He feels that His guru ji was with him always. This story depicts krishna bhagawan's Honest Guru Bhakthi.

Story of Padmapadacharya:

Padmapadacharya's life exemplifies the Guru-Sishya relationship. For Padmapadacharya, the Guru is everything and the command of Guru is ultimate. Once when he was on the opposite bank of a river, Sankara who was on the other side called him, and Padmapadacharya, without even thinking that he might be drowned in a swollen river began walking and a lotus appeared on every step that he would take and hold his feet from drowning - and that is why he came to be known as Padma-Pada - Lotus - Feet. His devotion exemplifies the relationship of Guru and Shishya.

Our next class - 6/2/24.

Hari OM Dear Families,

Here is this week's update.

Week : 26
12th May 2024 9:15AM

Class began with 3 OMs followed by

"Om Saha Navavatu" (page 8 in My Prayers book)
Om shrI Ganeśaya Namaha,  shrI Saraswatyai Namaha,  shrI Sat Gurubhyo Namaha.
"Vakratunda Mahakaya" (page 27 in My Prayers book)
"Saraswati Namastubhyam" (page 12 in My Prayers book)
"Gurur Brahma" (page 60 in My Prayers book)
"Neelaam buja" & "SriRama Rama rameti" (page 129 My prayers book)

Key to Success- Vibhishana Gita Amala achala mana trona samana- quiver which stands for a pure and steady mind. Selfishness is the biggest enemy for a seeker. Pure mind means a mind devoid of selfishness. There are two types of mind- (pure and impure) In entire spiritual sadhana, Pooja, japa, keertan, yatra, study, seva, havan- all these disciplines are aimed at making a pure mind. Our enemy in the spiritual path is selfishness. we must try and remove it! How to remove selfishness?

1. Start taking up/ doing selfless work.

2. Increase selfless works

3. To have a seva bhava slowly in our entire life. Commit to selfless work - gradually make life, selfless life (to purify ourselves)

Pure mind is a quiet mind. But usually the mind keeps continuously moving. How to reduce the fast movements of the mind and make it slow?

Firstly, continuous thoughts (moving) (Chala) of the mind to be kept steady (Achala)

The thoughts are moving at a particular speed, we must try to reduce the speed. Mind will be running and running all the time. If we focus on one thing, the flow of thoughts will be less/reduced. More the thoughts, the more wandering we are.
If Body and mind are in the same place (alignment) the speedy movements of the mind can be reduced. If the practice of keeping Body and mind aligned, the mind will be pure and steady. When we are into performing any act, we must give full attention to the mind, then the speeding of the flow of thoughts is reduced, which helps in purifying the mind. BM in alignment, we live in the present and could feel the thought flow is less, slowly the mind will become steady. Therefore we should start living in the present.

The next part is arrows. Sama Jama Niyama seela mukha nana.
Mind being balanced is the quiver- Sama- Peacefulness of the mind

*Practicing peaceful mind is Sama (Santhi)

5 Noble values of life- Jama

Daily disciplines- Niyama

In Yoga sastra, Acharya Patanjali speaks about Yama(Jama) and Niyama for a disciplined lifestyle.

The Following are Yama(Jama) values of life

1.Ahimsa (Non harming, non violence in thought, deed and word. When we think of violence, we generally think only about physical or verbal abuse. Negative thoughts are also considered violent as repeated thoughts lead to action in the future and the spread of negativity. So it is very important to practice non-violence in thoughts, words and deeds.

2.Satyam (Truthfulness) As Mark Twain once said, "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything." The truth is always constant but a lie keeps changing its path. We have to spend unnecessary energy in fabricating stories when we speak the truth. It is always easier to tell the truth than to lie.

3.Asteyam (non stealing) Stealing, as we understand, is stealing physical and intellectual property of a person. Most of us, who are innocent in this respect, are guilty of a different kind of stealing. The resources and energy that we steal from Mother Nature brings about lasting damages unseen.  Our pledge says,  'giving more than what we take'. We should try to give more of ourselves to others and to Mother Nature as well.

4.Brahmacharyam (self control or right use of energy) Self Control is Self-discipline. Most of the famous achievers have reached their position due to their rigorous discipline and self control. We observe this in our kids who are into various performing arts and sports. When they are passionate about it to excel in it, they are willing to go through the rigor that it entails.

5.Aparigraha (non greed/ non hoarding) Greed is a bottomless pit. The more we try to satisfy it the deeper it gets. Keeping others in mind, we should avoid hoarding. We can take a spoonful for the first serving and come back, if we need a second, in our ashram when we eat together. Instead, if we load our plateful, often we end up throwing food and we might indirectly make some last ones in the line to turn disappointed as the food will be over!

The following are Niyama Values

1.Saucha (cleanliness) Everyday we have the ritual of brushing our teeth and showering, etc to keep our bodies clean. Prayer is an everyday ritual for cleaning and tidying our mind. Mind too requires everyday cleansing

2.Santosa (Contentment) Contentment leads to a feeling of gratitude. Prayer should be an offering of our gratitude to the Lord. Such prayer, like the study of our scriptures, is the only way to purify the mind that gives utmost contentment and happiness.

3.Tapas (discipline, austerity or burning enthusiasm) For the mind to be aligned with the body. In other words, to keep the mind in control. Meditation leads to a calming nature and slows down our actions, deeds and words. The slowing process allows more focusing and a full control on what we do/say.

4.Swadhyaya (Study of the self and of the texts) Group prayers and satsanga brings in immense power which can be felt with continuous practice of the same.

5. Ishvarapranidhana (Surrender to a higher being or contemplation of a higher power) Gurudev was once asked if Prayer was like begging God. Gurudev responded that if Prayer was asking for things from God then it is definitely equal to begging. Prayer, in his words, is a means to invoke the divinity within us. Iswara bhakti and Guru Bhakti have no second opinion.

Always remember what we have got and be thankful and don't think about what we have missed/don't have. A wise person is never bothered about what he has not got. Only then can we carry on the peacefulness within.

After the lessons, we assembled at the mantapa to celebrate sankara and gurudev jayanthi by doing pooja and chanting guru stothram.

Hari OM Dear Families,

Here is this week's update.

Week : 24
28th Apr 2024 9:15AM

Class began with 3 OMs followed by

"Om Saha Navavatu" (page 8 in My Prayers book)
Om shrI Ganeśaya Namaha,  shrI Saraswatyai Namaha,  shrI Sat Gurubhyo Namaha.
"Vakratunda Mahakaya" (page 27 in My Prayers book)

"Gurur Brahma" (page 60 in My Prayers book)
"Neelaam buja" & "SriRama Rama rameti" (page 129 My prayers book)

We did  a  meditation session with OM background.

Vibheeshan Geeta (Key to Success)
Today's topic-
The Axe- Dana Parasu- Charity is my axe. Being Generous and to practice generosity by donating for charity. Why should we do Dana? As a seeker it is always good to give. "Giving more than what we take " line from our CM pledge. If God has given you knowledge, talent, skill, love, wealth and property- share it with others. By practicing Dana, you become richer and the world around you benefits. By giving you are learning and practicing- Detachment. You learn to let go. A person who is doing dana, will  not hold on to anything (from the past)
Buddhi Sakthi prachanda- Understanding is the missile. Understanding is common sense. We see common sense with a prejudiced mind. For example, we need not be scared in a house when there is no one. But if we spot a sudden person, there is a meaning to being scared and confused. This happens where there is a lack of understanding the scenario. Non verifying facts we unnecessarily imagine, is due to the absence of common sense.

Rama tells Vibhisana, "I have a perfect and a clear understanding of life, people, relationship and war!"    Var vigyan kathina kothanda- The bow that stands for self knowledge. One of the main enemies we face is ignorance. Self knowledge is our weapon against this enemy and our Guru plays a major role in alleviating our ignorance. Self knowledge is the realization that we are one with all the beings in the universe

As an exercise in self knowledge, students were asked to talk about themselves and say 2 things about themselves. The class then reflected on how difficult it can be to know our superficial self let alone our inner spiritual self.

We practiced for our upcoming grade presentation.

The event date is May 5th.

The stage (rehearsal) practice is scheduled on 5/4 saturday at 5 pm until 6.30. (please lookout for more instructions in the whatsapp group)

Our next class - 5/5/24.

Hari OM Dear Families,

Here is this week's update.

Week : 23
21st Apr 2024 9:15AM

Class began with 3 OMs followed by

"Om Saha Navavatu" (page 8 in My Prayers book)
Om shrI Ganeśaya Namaha,  shrI Saraswatyai Namaha,  shrI Sat Gurubhyo Namaha.
"Vakratunda Mahakaya" (page 27 in My Prayers book)
"Saraswati Namastubhyam" (page 12 in My Prayers book)
"Gurur Brahma" (page 60 in My Prayers book)
"Neelaam buja" & "SriRama Rama rameti" (page 129 My prayers book)

We did  a  meditation session with OM background.

Vibheeshan Geeta (Key to Success)
Today's topic- EEsha bhajan Sarathy sujaana- The charioteer.
Devotion to God is the intelligent Charioteer. An intelligent charioteer is the one with a pure intellect. Love is the greatest motivational force that keeps pushing us forward. Devotion to the Lord is the pushing force. The Love towards the Lord is Bhakthi. Love towards materialistic things is attachment (Raaga)
The charioteer symbolizes devotion to God. Devotion to God is not only very important but it helps us realize that we don't carry the burden of worries. We should always do our best but never forget that God is the one that leads us to our destiny. Krishna was the charioteer for Arjuna, one of the greatest warriors of Mahabharata but he had utmost devotion and faith in Krishna, the lord himself. Hence his confusions about fighting his own relatives were cleared by the Lord Himself leading him to victory!

Stories discussed- The priest and the milkman, who from these two had more bhakthi bhava in fulfilling their duties. The milkman had full faith and bhakthi that he walked across the river to fetch milk to the priest at the right time to complete the pooja. The jealous priest could not even put one foot on the water as his full bhakthi lacked.
In another story, Naradha wanted to prove his pure bhakthi for Narayana than Hanuman ji and both started to play veena and sing. Hanuman ji's singing and playing was so divine and had no pause and the continuity was filled with sweetness but whereas Naradha was burning with jealousy and his presentation lacked bhakthi and he had to agree that he had lost to Hanuman ji when all the strings of the veena broke.
Having bhakthi bhava with full heart leads to the path of moksha and reaches God directly, that's the power of sarathy who could easily navigate through any turbulence on the way and take us to the Lord's feet.

The Shield - Dispassion/Detachment (Birati): Passion, the development of an interest or a liking can be towards something on a lower level or a higher level. A passion for something higher can inspire us to work hard and achieve great things. If we want to stay happy, keep the shield of dispassion or detachment in front of us. The attitude of "I have it, but I don't own it" is the key to withstand the detachment. An example would be, your beautiful beach vacation home which faces the dancing waves. You enjoy until your vacation time and that's your booked resort and you don't own it for yourself and you leave happily on the day of the end of the vacation, instead if you claim it's your cottage, this is absurd! This art, if you learn, this method, this value you cultivate within, wherever you go.., you'll be free. Recognizing that happiness is within us and not in the objects that we seek, we develop dispassion in our lives.

The Sword- Santosa (contentment) "There is enough in the world for our needs, but there is never enough for our greed".
"I wanted 20 things, but I got 12 things, I'm happy!"
"I wanted 20 things, but I got ONLY 12 things, I'm happy but I didn't get it all"- Both these statements do convey different sense, one is non materialistic (No Raaga) and the other is materialistic (raaga, attachment in abundance) Sri Rama tells Vibhisana, "my sword is santhosa ; I cut the world with happiness, I can go and wield the sword happily" Do we need reasons to be happy? We have enough and more reasons to be happy, always!
Pujya Gurdev was content just to taste only three dishes during Chappan Bhoga at one of the govardhan pooja celebrations, even though devotees wanted him to try everything offered.

Stories discussed- The barber and 12 pots of gold, where he lost his happiness and was so attached to his materialistic mind in earning for the 12th pot to be filled with gold. In the process, he became so poor but tried to be richer going the wrong path without being honest.

We practiced for our upcoming grade presentation.

The date is May 5th.

The stage (rehearsal) practice is scheduled on 5/4 at 5 pm until 6.30.

Our next class - 4/28/24, we will continue our class presentation practice.

Hari OM Dear Families,

Here is this week's update.

Week : 22
14th Apr 2024 9:15AM

The horsesBala, Viveka, Dama and Parahita.... Strength, discrimination, Self control and caring for others, respectively.

Bala- Inner strength (through self effort, keeping the mind strong)

mental strength comes from being free of desire and attachments.

Bibeka/Viveka- Discrimination- having the power to know and convincingly make judgment. Understanding true from false, right from wrong. Know the subject thoroughly to get judgmental.

Dama- control over senses and not being addicted to it leads to Achieving a goal is made easy. The ability to know when to stop being tempted.

Parahita- Service to others… "Devotion to the people is devotion to the supreme self" The ability to care for others

The Reins - The reins of the horses symbolize forgiveness, compassion, equanimity - Kshama, Krpa and Samata.

KShama (Forgiving)

Kshama- Forgiveness- is a quality of a noble person or a hero. A great person wears forgiveness as an ornament. "Kshama veerasya bhooshanaha"

There are 3 levels of forgiveness. 1. Not offended at all

2. Feels offended, but forgives and forgets

3. When an offending person apologizes and asks for it.

True forgiveness is when we actually forget that the other person has hurt our feelings. We should have the attitude of a mother who would forgive her little baby even though the baby may pull her hair or kick her. Love is very essential for forgiveness. (The story of Eknath Maharaj and the story of Mother Teresa)

Through our act of forgiveness we are the ones that stand to gain.

Krpa- Compassion, unconditional love, act of kindness, understanding others' POV/situation ; understanding other's pain and comforting a person in need. Sympathy/empathy.

When we practice forgiveness with love, naturally we become a compassionate person.

Samata- Equality- treating people equally ; Balancing the emotions.

The third rein, equanimity, can be achieved when we are able to calm our mind and accept it.  We should practice this quality, taking the lead from Lord Rama! Within a few hours, he went from being a crown prince to an exiled person having to live an austere life! In both situations, He exhibited equanimity. He expressed silatha for rendering the happenings in a nice way, He was not carried away by the situation, He did not become a victim of the circumstances (same balanced feeling while given the order of His coronation and given the order to move into the forest life for 14 years).   His life was a lesson on virtuous living for all humans.

We practiced for our upcoming grade presentation. The date is May 5th.

Geeta chanting on 4/20. Those who are taking part, practice well and chant well. Good luck.

Our next class - 4/21/24, we will continue our class presentation practice.
