Oct 29, 2023 - Grade 8 (Sunday AM)

Hari Om Parents!

We started the class with 3 OM, followed by the Dhyana Slokas.

We followed up on the homework. Some kids did not remember or did not do the homework and also we had only 50% attendance. So we decided to give the kids another week and review the homework next week.

Next we moved on with the next topic from our curriculum which is understanding Dharma through Mahabharata.

We started with the conversation as what is Mahabharata called? Kids answered by saying Epic and Ithihasa.

In order to bring clarity of why Mahabharata should be of reference when it comes to knowing about Bharat(India) and Dharma aspects, we started to discuss the below to encourage parallel thinking:

  • How History is written? And what similarities could be found in different civilizations related history?- Kids answered by saying order of the events, timeline, stories that happened during those years etc.,

  • What are the main aspects captured in the history by the author? - kids talked about using facts, symbolism and lesson learnt etc.,

  • If history was written by other civilization/country author by another civilization/country, would it have a real facts? For example British ruled many countries in the world. Especially some of the British authors did not depict the Indian civilization or culture in the right way.

  • Conclusion: if we want to really know about a civilization and culture of a nation, we should be referring the native authenticated author's books.

One such great book/ Ithihasa is Mahabharata written by Veda Vyasa. Did he really write?🤔

Our kids know a lot. They immediately said No. Ganesha wrote while Vyasa describes the events as it happened during that yuga.

Basically Ganesh was a scribe. So we played a game where group of words were said without a pause and the kids have to write it down. We played this game to highlight the skills of a scribe. Scribe should be more attentive, alert and observer and understand what is being said to capture the right information.

Kids enjoyed the game and did well writing down most of the words.

Today was a short class due to Saraswti pooja.

Finally we said the closing prayer and went to participate in the Saraswati pooja.
