September 17, 2023 -  Class Updates

  1.  Kids wrote Likhita japa for the first five minutes.
  2. We started off the class with the chanting of OM three times and opening prayer (Dhyana shloka - Om Saha Navavatu) 
  3. Shloka chanting -  practiced first two verses of Ganesha Pancharatnam
    1. Kids learnt the meaning of the first verse. Kids did great in the class by following the chanting. Please practice with them 
  4. Introduction of Mahabharata
    1. About the author - Veda Vyasa
      1. Classified the vedas as the Rig-Veda, the Yajur-Veda, the Sama-Veda and the Atharva-Veda
      2. Author of 18 puranas, Mahabharatam, and Srimad Bhagavatam
      3. About Mahabharata
        1. has 100,000 verses
        2. has 18 parvas (parts)
          1. Significance of the number 18 
        3. original name is Jaya (victory)
        4. review of the four parvas in this year's curriculum -   Aadi, Sabhaa, Vana and Viraata Parva
        5. Lord Ganesha being the scribe and the conditions put forth for writing
  5. Story of a Saint - Adi Shankaracharya
      1. Discussion about Guru Parampara using the pictures on the whiteboard
      2. Birth of Shankara in Kalady, Kerala around 8th century AD
      3. Around the age of 8 years, he went North by foot to the banks of the Narmada River to meet his Guru, Sri Govinda Bhagavatpada
      4. After learning from his Guru, he went to Varanasi (Kashi or Benares)
      5. Later on, he went to Badrinath to meet his Guru's guru Sri Gaudapada
      6. He travelled across the country to establish the four mutts (listed in the map below)
      7. Values to be learned from him - to be a preserver of spiritual heritage
      8. Kids each received a paper copy of a India map and marked the places of his travel and mutts in their own copy (like below)
